Razlikuju se po ispruženim držanjem vrata u letu. Hrane se raznovrsnom hranom. Jedu ribe, žabe i sitne sisare, a neke kao afrički marabu (Leptoptiloserumeniferus) hrane se lešinama. On je ujedno i najveci predstavnik svoje porodice, i jedna od najvećih ptica letacica na svijetu.
