Results of the 5th International White Stork Census (1994) in Spain
Ramón Martí (SEO/BirdLife)
ABSTRACT Within the 5th International White Stork Census 1994/95 a national census was carried out in Spain in 1994. The breeding population was found to be 16 643 HPa, representing about 90% of the number of breeding pairs in the European Community. The population has more than doubled as compared to the previous census in 1984 (6753 HPa). The population density (StD) related to the breeding range of the White Stork in Spain was 4.7 HPa/100 km² in 1994 and only 1.9 HPa/100 km² in 1984. The strong increase still continues: during an incomplete census in 1996 the Spanish White Stork population was estimated to be approx.18 000 HPa. The mean breeding success in 1994 was calculated to be JZa = 2.17. Considering the size of the breeding population and the current positive trend it is suggested to move the White Stork from the category "Vulnerable" of the Spanish Red Data Book to the category "Out of danger".
